Lights, Camera, Action!
Two-part hands-on workshop
of
the Local Video Film Festival focusing on
“Looking Back to the Future,
Envisioning Our Communities in 2030”
Preparations continue for the local video film project, Looking Back to the Future, Envisioning Our Communities in the Year 2030 during which residents of all ages, living within the Pioneer Valley Regional School (PVRS) District, will create short video films on how their communities can become more environmentally and economically sustainable. Films will later be shown and discussed publicly in a festival format.
During the next two months, hands-on workshops will be held for those who are thinking of making a film during the project. During March, BNCTV will offer Lights, Camera, Action, a two-part hands-on workshop designed to acquaint participants with cameras, sound and editing and with the BNCTV professionals and interns who are available to provide technical support. During April, two more workshops are planned on film content, local resources and copyright law.
Beginning March 2nd from 7:00-8:30 PM at the PVRS Kiva Seminar Room, Otis Wheeler, Operations Manager at BNCTV will work with workshop participants on using digital video cameras, lighting and sound. Those attending may bring their own cameras or use cameras provided by BNCTV. Assisting Wheeler will be Ian Bauer of Gill, who is currently a student at the Connecticut School of Broadcasting. According to Wheeler, “the workshop will be hands-on, fun, and designed for participants from ages 8 to 88.”
At a follow-up workshop planned for March 30th from 7:00-8:30 PM at the PVRS Kiva Seminar Room, Wheeler and Bauer will focus on how to use non-linear video editing software. Participants may bring their own laptops or use software provided by BNCTV (Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere, or iMovie).
By April, those who have attended presentations and workshops will be ready to begin shooting outside and so two April workshops called, So You Want To Make a Film… will be conducted to help participants develop film content, to use local resources and to adhere to copyright laws. The dates for those workshops will be April 13th and April 27th, both from 7:00-8:30 PM at the PVRS Kiva Seminar Room. At these two workshops, a variety of resource people will be available for brainstorming ideas, finding online material, and directing participants to local historical images and documents.
The project is co-sponsored by Transition Towns Northfield and Warwick, Bernardston-Northfield Community Television (BNCTV) and the Pioneer Valley Institute. Libraries and local historical societies will assist filmmakers with resources. The “kickoff” to the program, in late 2010, Rawn Fulton, Steve Alves and Kerry Kazokas, three local filmmakers spoke during a series on the art and craft of filmmaking and are available for viewing on BNCTV.net.
